Winter Car Care Tips
The International Auto Service Center wants all residents in the West Hartford and Hartford area to drive safe this winter. Here is a checklist of our most important items to keep in mind before driving in harsh winter weather this season.
Brakes: Have your brakes checked before driving in winter terrain. Brakes are you most important safety item so these are essential to your families health. These should be top of your priority list. Emergency Kit: Make sure to stock a kit with snow brush, scraper, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottles water and dry snacks. These items will become very handy if you are stuck on the side of the road on a winter evening. Lights: Do a manual check on all of your vehicles lights. Make sure your headlights are aimed properly, exterior lights/brakes lights work well and your interior lights click on for your safety. Antifreeze: Clean, flush and fill up with new Antifreeze before cold winter weather. Wipers: Use cold weather washer fluid and winter windshield wiper blades. This will help keep the windshield defrosted and clear of ice/slush. Tune Up: Its essential to get a tune up before every winter! Rule of thumb is every fall and spring before severe weather. The winter weather magnifies existing problems such as hard starts, pings, rough idling and sluggish performance. Battery: Cold weather is hard on batteries. Get your battery and charging system checked for optimum performance. Tires: Check tire pressure weekly in cold weather as tire pressure decreases when temperature drops. Check your tire tread before driving in snow or icy conditions to maximize traction. Have you looked into winter tires? Gas Tank: Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid moisture forming in gas lines and possibly freezing. Exhaust System: Keep an eye on carbon monoxide leaks. This can be very dangerous when driving with your windows closed.
